Interesting Stats – 07/08 Season

In an attempt to kill a few hours, I decided to browse the stats section of NHL.com. I know, it is summer outside, but I am counting down the days until the puck drops.

While looking I found some interesting stats from last year:

Faceoff Percentage (FO)
Jarret Stoll the PP FO% King – Stoll took 110 faceoffs on the power play winning 81 for a PPFO% of 73.6%. In contrast, Horcoff had a PPFO% of 52.5% (92 of 175).

But don’t worry about the loss of Stoll in regards to our PP as we have a secret weapon on that front – SAM GAGNER! Yes, the Sam Gagner who had a 41.8% FO% last year.

Digging a little deeper into the FO stats you’ll see that Gagner had a PPFO% of 62.6% (47 of 75) - Clutch!Gagner’s role on the team is only likely to increase next year one can only hope that his clutch ability on PPFO’s will continue. Not to mention his overall FO% - calling Adam Oates!

Home/Away
Homesick Brodziak – during his breakout season last year Brodziak posted 31 pts to solidify his place on the team. A quick look into his Home/Road stats and you will see that he seems to be a different player at home than on the road. For 07/08, Brodziak generated 71% (22 of 31) of his points at home, which is by far the highest on the team (at least 20 pts).

In contrast to Brodziak, you have Robert Nilsson who generated 63% (26 of 41) of his points total on road.

Could it be that Brodziak feeds off the energy and pressure of a hometown crowd while Nilsson succeeds in a less intense environment?

Shooting Percentage
Hossa? Who needs him! We have two elite snipers on our team – put the puck on their stick and their are good odds that the Oilers will get a goal. Who are they? Shawn Horcoff and Andrew Cogliano. How good are they? Top 10 in the NHL. Horcoff posted a shooting percentage of 18.3% while Cogliano put up 18.4%, which were good for seventh and sixth overall.

Ok… so shooting percentage isn’t the best measure of NHL sniperability but can at least be used in a conversation regarding the topic.

And not that this will change anything but Ales “if only he would shoot more” Hemsky was 3rd on the Oilers in shots and 92nd in the league just behind Ryan Getzlaf.
Nothing earth shattering…
